FTC report recommended suing Google for anti-competitive practices

  • Google for violating antitrust rules before the agency settled its investigation in 2013
  • The FTC settled its multi-year investigation of Google in 2013
  • Google had manipulated its search results to hurt rivals.
  • Speculation about potential consumer and competitor harm turned out to be entirely wrong
  • 19-month review, covering 9 million pages of documents and many hours of testimony, the FTC staff and all five commissioner agreed that there was no need to take action
The Google homepage.Key staff members at the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) were in favour of suing Google for violating antitrust rules before the agency settled its investigation in 2013, according to a confidential report cited by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The report by the staff of the FTC’s competition bureau argued that the owner of the world’s biggest search engine illegally took information from rival websites to improve its own results and placed restrictions on websites and advertisers. The report recommended suing Google for several of its business practices. The FTC settled its multi-year investigation of Google in 2013, concluding that the company had not manipulated its search results to hurt rivals.

Google 'illegally took content from Amazon, Yelp, Trip Advisor,' report finds

  • Google search practices investigation creates at least the appearance that politics, and not merits, drove the FTC’s ultimate conclusion.”
  • America’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted unanimously to end its investigation into Google in early 2013 after extracting concessions from the Silicon Valley Company.
  • The findings, contained in a report produced in 2012 by FTC staff to advise commissioners before their final decision on the case, claim Google also caused “harm to many vertical competitors”.
  • Inits 2013 settlement, the FTC ruled against Google on scraping. Rivals can now opt out of having their content lifted, without fear of being demoted in the search rankings.
Google manipulated its search results to promote its own services over those of rival websites in ways that led to “real harm to consumers”, a previously unpublished report by American regulators has concluded. But documents accidentally handed to the Wall Street Journal show the FTC’s own investigators claim Google’s “conduct has resulted – and will result – in real harm to consumers and to innovation in the on-line search and advertising markets”.

In my opinion I think that Google being a massive cooperate business shouldn't have taken data and used it in this way to make their business more profitable. Manipulating the search criteria is not ethical and people may question Google as a business of being bias at presenting search results.

Gamer raided by Swat team in front of 60,000 viewers

Joshua Peters, was targeted by anonymous attackers in the middle of a Twitch stream of the browser game Runescape. The veteran was confronted by 10 armed SWAT team members where they had arrived at the veteran’s house and was in shock.

Facts/Phrases:

Joshua Peters streaming live on Twitch.
  • Before ending the show, the streamer turned back to the audience, and addressed his attacker. “I see you posting my address. I had police point a gun at my little brothers because of you. They could have been shot, they could have died. Because you chose to swat my stream. I don’t give a shit about what you have against me, or what I did to you. For that I am at a loss for words. Your gripe is with me. But do not involve my family in this. They don’t deserve it.”

In my opinion, this has been caused due to the advancement of new and digital media. This is because the rise has introduced newer cyber crimes, like taking peoples networks or channels down for publicity.

Google backtracks on porn ban in Blogger

  • Google has backtracked on plans to ban sexually explicit images from its blogging platform Blogger, in the face of widespread opposition from users

The company had initially announced a ban on “sexually explicit or graphic nude images or video”, with just a few exceptions for content which offered “a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts”.

  • Jessica Pelegio, a social product support manager at Google, wrote: “We’ve had a ton of feedback, in particular about the introduction of a retroactive change (some people have had accounts for 10+ years), but also about the negative impact on individuals who post sexually explicit content to express their identities.
  • “Blog owners should continue to mark any blogs containing sexually explicit content as ‘adult’ so that they can be placed behind an ‘adult content’ warning page,”
  • Since at least 2012 The company has warned users to “not use Blogger as a way to make money on adult content”, and says it does not allow “illegal sexual content, including image, video or textual content that depicts or encourages rape, incest, bestiality, or necrophilia.”
That ban, which has been in place since November 2014, was matched by social news site Reddit this week. The company’s chief executive, Ellen Pao, said that “effective 10 March, Reddit will prohibit any photograph, video or digital image of a person who is nude or engaged in a sexual act if the subject has not given permission for it to be used”.

I think that the internet is changing everyday and evolving therefore the rules and regulations businesses have for their consumers will forever be changing. More companies are becoming more lenient on pornography laws whereas some are become more harsh
